Lance's Summer Letter 2015

Hi Friends!

This Sunday we celebrate the Summer solstice. We experience the sun at its highest and hottest and give thanks for the energy of Fire that it offers us. The powerful growth spurts of springtime have given way to an abundance of new life. We have beautiful plants including yummy vegetables and powerful healing herbs, buzzing insects and noisy birds squaking in the loudest voice they can. Summer is the time of year the energy of nature is at its fullest, biggest, brightest. Life is shining and moving as powerfully as it can.

In us the energetic movement that summertime represents shows up as our fullest capacity of being. We have abundant energy, our biggest heart and love, playfullness, intimacy, relationships and joy come easily and abundantly.

In 5 element medicine the goal is to keep the energy moving through this natural cycle. When it gets stuck thats when dis-ease, pain or upset occur. When the shining Summer energy (FIRE element) within us gets out of balance you may feel sad, lonely, shy, doubtful, confused, anxious or depressed. You may find it hard to make friends or have intimate relationships. You may feel low energy, lack of warmth or experience insomnia or heart disease.

When Fire is in balance it offers the gifts of warmth, partnership, compassion, joy, laughter and touch.

If your Summertime energy or FIRE element is feeling stuck here are a couple exercises that can help!

DANCE! Turn on your favorite music and let your body move! you can even sing along if you want. There is a wonderful saying from Zimbabwe that goes: "If you can talk you can sing If you can walk you can dance"

LAUGH! How do you get holy water? Boil the hell out of it.
HAHHAHAHAHHA. Do what it takes. read jokes online...tell the good ones to a friend or beloved. watch a comedy or listen to a comedian...i really like Steven Wright and Mitch hedberg...give them a try =)

SMORES! Gather your friends and make an old fashioned campfire. Tell stories, jokes, make smores...PS...Grandfather Fire always likes a good joke..the dirtier the better =)

If you have been receiving seasonal acupuncture treatments, now is the perfect time to come in for your Summer session. We can help bring Joy to your body, mind and soul! If you are new to acupuncture now is the perfect time to jump into sessions =) Also if you know anyone who may be interested please feel free to pass on this newsletter!

See you soon!!!

Philadelphia Area Acupuncturist Offers Free Treatments For Cancer Patients

Local acupuncturist and founder of Wayne Family Wellness, Lance Isakov, is offering free acupuncture to cancer patients suffering with pain, emotional upsets, and/or other side effects from their treatment. The free acupuncture program will function like a scholarship award and 2 selected applicants per quarter will receive a round of 12 treatments.

Acupuncture applies needles, heat, pressure, and other techniques to one or more specific places  or points on the skin. In patients with cancer, acupuncture is used to relieve pain, to help ease fear, anxiety, stress, and help with other symptoms that will improve quality of life. There is strong evidence from recent clinical trials, for example, that acupuncture relieves nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy

“My intention is to be in service to my community as part of my practice,” says Isakov, "to not only help those suffering but to also help spread the word about how beneficial acupuncture can be for helping with the pain and emotional roller coaster ride that comes with cancer and its treatments.”

Mr. Isakov has practiced acupuncture for 15 years and holds a Masters Degree in Acupuncture from The Maryland University of Integrative Health and is a Diplomate of Acupuncture with The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Mr. Isakov is also a faculty supervisor for the acupuncture student clinic at The Won Institute, in Glenside, PA .  Mr. Isakov is published author and has had numerous health related articles in local publications. He is also the author of  Five Element Acupuncture & You, A Modern Guide to an Ancient Healing Art.

Mr. Isakov currently has a private practice at Wayne Family Wellness. a Holistic Acupuncture Center with adjunct services such as Therapeutic Massage and Energy-work, located on the mainline in  Wayne, PA. Mr. Isakov specializes in the treatment of emotional upset, feelings of overwhelm, and physical pain.

Your tongue speaks! (and it tells all)

Your tongue speaks! (and it tells all)
By Lance Isakov, M.Ac., Licensed Acupuncturist

Here is the third in a series of articles to help explain particular aspects of Chinese Medicine to my patients! As those of you who have come in for acupuncture know, I spend quite a lot of time with diagnostics including reading your pulses and looking at your tongue. This helps me find the root cause of your upset and gives me information to treat you effectively and safely.

Last time we talked about pulses, today we will talk about your TONGUE.

If you've had an acupuncture treatment, then you've been asked to stick out your tongue.  I like to call the tongue the “Chinese X-Rays” (fun fact alert!) as it’s the only internal organ we can see from the outside.

By observing the color, shape, texture, coat and thickness of the tongue we can see how our whole body is functioning. These observations allow us to detect imbalances in different systems in our body. The tongue changes as the state of your health changes. Unlike reading your pulse which changes very quickly, the changes to the tongue appear more slowly. Therefore the tongue diagnosis is a wonderful, visible, marker of your improvements over the course of your acupuncture sessions.

So this is the perfect time to grab a mirror or a buddy! Go on, I’ll wait…okay!

A normal tongue is pink in color, medium thickness, has no cracks, ulcers, or teeth marks and has a light white coat on it.  However, just like a snowflake, rarely are two tongues alike. You can monitor your own health level by taking a look in the mirror and tracking changes that occur.

Here’s a common example I see everyday in the treatment room: a red tongue tip! A red tongue indicates heat in general, a red tip indicates heat specifically in the heart.  Heat in the heart typically rises from chronic emotional upset, and can be experienced as anxiety, depression or even excess anger or frustration. Once diagnoses appropriately, acupuncture is a powerful tool to help with these upsets, and, as you feel better, your tongue will change!

Here are some other common examples:
A deep crack down the middle of the tongue: Digestive Issues (Stomach/Spleen Deficiency)
Swollen with teethmarks on the edges: fatigue, poor appetite, shortness of breath, worry (Spleen Qi Deficiency)
Pale Tongue: Dizziness, fatigue, palpitations, memory issues, insomnia (Blood Deficiency)
Quivering Tongue: pain that moves around in the body, cold/flu, rashes, spasms (Wind)
Greasy white coating: feeling of fullness, bloating, lethargy, feeling heavy (Dampness)

So what do you think? Pretty amazing right?! Our bodies have so much to share with us, and sometimes it's all on the tip of your tongue!!

If you are wondering about your tongue or have questions about your health in general, come on in for a diagnostic session, we can chat, check out your tongue, help you feel better, and maybe even help you THRIVE!! Go ahead and book online =)

P.S. if you write the word tongue a lot, the word starts to look really funny =)

P.P.S. Thank you to Sam, my tongue model, who revealed her health to the world <3

Why I love to hold your hand in the treatment room

Here is the second in a series of articles to help explain particular aspects of Chinese Medicine to my patients! As those of you who have come in for acupuncture know, I spend quite a lot of time with diagnostics including reading your pulses and looking at your tongue. This helps me find the root cause of your upset and gives me information to treat you effectively and safely. Today we will talk about PULSES, next time we'll talk about our tongues!

Chinese Pulse Diagnosis is sadly a disappearing art. Mostly because it is quit difficult, requires an extraordinary amount of sensitivity and knowledge and takes a long time to learn. I have been particularly fascinated with this diagnostic technique and have done years of extra in-depth study with an amazing pulse master fine tuning my skills.

Okay, this is amazing...when I read your radial (wrist) pulse, not only am I reading the rate, rhythm, and intensity of pulse, but  I am also reading at least 12 different individual pulses - in six positions and two depths (see pic below) When read this way the pulse gives insight into each of the major organ systems of the body.

By comparing the different pulses we can get a really precise idea of how the systems in your body are relating to each other. Are some organ systems compensating for poor functioning ones? Are there blocks in the flow of energy? All of this data provides valuable information in determining the root cause of your pain or upset and tells me exactly where I need to place the needles to help you feel better and even THRIVE!

Cool right?

pulses

heres a simple example of how this can work! Check it out...

In the body the Liver Meridian feeds into the Lung Meridian. So if we feel like the deep middle pulse on the left hand (Liver) is excessive (too much energy) and the deep 1st pulse on the right hand (Lung) is deficient (too little energy) we know that there is a block thats building up in the liver channel and preventing energy from going into the Lung channel. Make sense?

So how would this show up from the patient's perspective? Because the Liver organ system is responsible for anger, and the Qi is damned up there, I can guarantee that this patient is feeling very frustrated. If left untreated this can turn into other upsets down the line like depression, hopelessness, resentment, headaches, visual problems, muscle and tendon pain, and breathing issues.

Using acupuncture we can get rid of the damn and help the patient feel better instantly!

Pretty Cool right?!!

If you are wondering about your pulses and want to come in for a diagnostic session simply book online, come in, and I can take a look.

❤ What is the best time to make love... According to Chinese Medicine?

❤ What is the best time to make love... According to Chinese Medicine?
By Lance Isakov, M.Ac., Licensed Acupuncturist & Yoga Teacher

Did you know that according to Chinese Medicine there is a best time to poop! There is also a best time to eat, to nap, to dream, to meditate and even to make love! I remember being wowed the first time I learned about the Law of Midday/Midnight or The Chinese Clock as its commonly known. Qi moves through the body just like a wave moves through water. The crest of this wave circulates through particular organ systems at different times of the day.

For example from 5-7 am, there is a greater amount of Qi in the Large Intestine. How is this helpful? Well, if you suffer from constipation, you will be more likely to move your bowels at 6 am than at any other time of day!

Why is breakfast the most important meal of the day? The stomach Qi is strongest from 7-9 am! It is easier to digest anything in the am! At the opposite time, from 7-9 PM the qi is lowest in the stomach, that is why a light dinner is beneficial!

What can you do instead of eating a big dinner? Make love! From 7-9 pm the Qi is in the Heart Protector/Circulation Sex function of the body! This function is responsible for relationships, communication, and the birds and the bees =)

So here are 3 more examples:
Best Time to Meditate: 3-5 Am - Lung time - Connection to Spirit/Breath
Best Time to Nap: 3-5 PM  - Siesta time! When the Qi is in the Bladder - the storehouse of energy in the body!
Best Time to Dream/be creative: 1-3 AM: Qi in the Liver - creativity and the wandering etheric body (Hun). (know any artists who like to create at that time of the morning?)

What time is it now? check the clock below to see what you could be doing! and if you have any questions feel free to ask! If you are wondering about the health of your internal Chinese Clock, simply book an appointment online, come in  and I can take a look.

Introducing Mount Airy Acupuncture

Hi all , A few months ago I moved with my wife Amy, daughter Luna and dog Nimbus from Chester Springs, PA to a wonderful little neighborhood in Mount Airy. (Where is Mount Airy? near Chestnut Hill, 20 minutes outside of Center City. :] ) We absolutely loved being out in the woods in Chester county but wanted to raise Luna in a neighborhood and be bit closer to the city. Well turns out we love our new spot in the world. Its the perfect mix of city and woods, with lots very friendly and diverse folks and a great community spirit.

So I feel like a really lucky guy because I get to spend my time in wonderful Wayne and Mt. Airy!

And I am happy to announce that, just this week, I have opened up an additional office 1 block away from my new home. Mount Airy Acupuncture is a beautiful, super calming and warm space above a really great restaurant called The Grain Exchange right in the heart of Mount Airy's business district.

I am so grateful to have the opportunity to expand our wellness community's reach to Philadelphia. It also means that my center city patients now have a much shorter commute for their sessions.

Currently I am in Wayne on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and Mt. Airy on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You can access either schedule from the Book Now button.

My utmost goal and what I am most passionate about is to help as many people as I can free up all the energy spent on feeling sick, tired, and stressed and put it toward living a rich life, full of purpose, meaning, and vitality.

I have said it before and I will say it again, thank you so much for allowing me to be on your wellness journey. It is truly a gift for me do be able to share the work I care so deeply about with you.

I really appreciate your support and if there is anything I can help you with please let me know!

with lots of love,

Life, gratitude, and subtle connection

Hi Everyone,

I am just feeling so grateful and connected to the magic of life and i wanted to share it with you. A couple of days ago i had a severe anaphylactic shock reaction to a wasp sting while hiking with my 3 year old, Luna. Just in case you are wondering - i made it =) And it was with so much grace and many miracles that i did!

Amazingly the perfect people aligned to be present exactly, and i mean exactly when i needed them.

My neighbors were called by my wife Amy and they happened to be walking right down the street and saw me as i was losing consciousness. They were able to take care of Luna and Nimbus the dog and RAN to my house to get my Epipen. AND then an emergency room doctor just happened to be walking right there! Right there when i needed them most, the universe conspired to shower me with - what i'll just call angels in action. If that alignment of souls did not arise, i might not be here to write this letter.

Its times like these that really put things into perspective. I just have so much gratitude for life and am so thankful that i have the gift of spending my precious time doing the work i love to do with you.

And since we never know when the bell will toll for us, i want to take this opportunity to thank you so much for allowing me to be part of your journey, it's truly an honor!

If life gets you down, you get lonely or upsets happen, remember that there is no doubt that a subtle but powerful force connects all of us!

To a long and happy life!!!
Lots of Love,
Lance

In the Spirit of Freedom

I hope you are having a great start to the week leading up to Independence Day.  This day celebrates our freedom from the Kingdom of Great Britain, but the meaning of freedom continues to expand. I've been contemplating freedom a lot recently while following the status of Nelson Mandela, who is in critical care.   Obama recently went to South Africa and urged it's people to carry forward the legacy of this great man (article).  His story holds a special place in my heart because I moved with my family from South Africa to America in 1986. My father risked everything to come to America so that he could have peace of mind.  While in South Africa, we lived in a middle class white neighborhood outside of Johannesburg where extreme inequality and violence was normal. The average white person's house was roomy, had a swimming pool and maids.  They also had 15 foot brick walls with electric barb wire fencing on top. Even though white people were technically free they had created their own prisons.  Outside our big brick walls it was normal to be carjacked or held at gun point and the government was very controlling.  They censored which books and movies we were allowed to watch and of course, they controlled the news.  During apartheid (1948-1990), black people were not considered citizens of South Africa. Their rights were stripped away and they were forced to live in overcrowded shanty towns. Mixed marriages of blacks and whites were illegal, families were torn apart. Buses, water fountains, public bathrooms, beaches, hospitals, and schools we all segregated. Four years after my family left South Africa, Apartheid was finally abolished and Nelson Mandela was released from his 27 year stay in Prison.  That man changed the face of the world and humanity got to see what moving forward together can look like.

Through my 20's, like many others of my generation, I was comfortable with the freedoms in America and I took them for granted.  I had a growing sense of mistrust with our government and felt we were being manipulated by the media and I would complain to my parents that America was an unjust country. Now, let me just say that there is a lot of media manipulation and plenty of injustice in America, but what I am more interested in just now is the historical context for all of this and where we can go.  My parents lived through a dark mark in human history and they have gratitude each day for the freedoms we enjoy here in America.  And those freedoms are here because of men and women that dared to see and demand for more than what was given to them.  Yes, they fought and died in wars, but they fought for something so much bigger than themselves.  And they knew about a better life to be had because of people who dared to speak it and write it and live it.

The 4 of July, was never really a big deal for me, but as I have developed and studied more of the history, I see how inspired our revolutionary forefathers and foremothers were. And I am grateful for their vision and what they made possible for all of us. The United States, as messy as it's been, was founded and is still being found in the spirit of making life better for everyone.  This is a process and more than ever, I want to be part of it. I want to be a freedom founder of our time. How can we dream out loud a vision of the future that gives thanks to where we've come from but isn't afraid to move on? How can we foster more liberty in each other? The American flag itself beckons us higher.  In the words of Eran Shalev, " … in the 1770s an alternative and revolutionary political cosmology emerged and was enshrined in the new nation’s [flag]: a diffuse constellation of uniform floating stars devoid of a solar center that embodied egalitarian and republican values...The American Revolution would thus give rise to new modes of understanding and communicating the political order: no kingly star overshadowed and dominated others; together they constituted a novel political system in which a plurality of individual stars held together, comprising a unity that was more perfect than its discrete parts.”

In the Spirit of Freedom,
Lance

Happy Spring

Can you feel the excitement of your own inner energy reflecting the trembling of nature about to explode with new life?

Shoots will soon be forcing their way through the soil and new leaves are just about to pop out of their buds. It's still early, but if you pay close attention, the potential energy is palpable.

In Five Element Acupuncture Theory this uprising power is associated with the Wood Element.
The goal in acupuncture is to keep the energy moving through this natural cycle. When it gets stuck, that's when dis-ease, pain or upset occur.

When the powerful uprising wood energy within us gets stuck we have particular experiences. For example on the physical level we may feel like our tendons and muscles are tight, we may getone-sided headaches or migraines, visionproblems or trouble sleeping. We may get angry or frustrated, or  we may lack visionflexibility, orcreativity

When in balance the springtime energy within brings us the gifts of humilityplanning, decision making, clear perception, creativity, appropriate anger, justice, vision, andflexibility.

If your springtime energy or wood element is feeling stuck here are a couple exercises that can help!

  • Meditate! Set your alarm for 20 minutes, sit up straight, be still, relax, pay attention, and have no relationship to your thoughts and feelings. Be conscious and allow your experience to be exactly as it is.  (if you need help getting started Try Lance's Guided Meditations)
  • Stretch! do some yoga, bend your body... loosen your muscles and tendons. Body twists like cat stretch are perfect to open up the wood element meridians of the Liver and Gallbladder
  • Create! even if you are not inspired, just start a creative project. write, draw, dance, sing, paint.

**** We are going to be doing ALL of these practices during our FANTASTIC Spring Kundalini Yoga and Healing Immersion. Will you join us?

If you have been receiving seasonal acupuncture treatments, now is the perfect time to come in for your spring session. We can help bring smooth movement and new life to your body, mind and soul! 4 Lessons from the "almost Spring"

by Lance Isakov, M.Ac., Acupuncturist & Yoga Teacher
edited by Amy Isakov

These are actual quotes I have heard this past week:

"I am losing my mind"
"I am ready to lay on a beach"
"When is this going to be over?" "I have cabin fever!"
"3 more inches!?"
"I can't wait to get my schedule back and get my kids in school!!"

Sound familiar?

This can be a frustrating time of year in the cycle of seasons.  We know spring is around the corner, in fact we are feeling a bubbling, sometimes pushing up of its energy deep within us, but alas - snow still covers the ground, the air is still frozen, and the spring equinox is still about a month away.

Each time of year has it’s own gifts and challenges in the cycle of the Five Elements. So, what in tarnation are those gifts of this "almost Spring" time of year?!

Here are four gifts to ponder:

Potential Energy - In nature the bulbs and seeds lay dormant and still in the winter. As the sun gets stronger and stronger, those seeds begin to gently stir and the energy begins to slowly build up until, BAM! There is a Crocus! Life has begun again and it brings us to our knees. This is the same stirring you are feeling within you. Your energy is getting ready to burst into life. What will you create?

Creativity - Part of our feeling of angst is that we are so aware of this potential energy but it just feels like it hits a barrier. Like a blade of grass trying to push through a concrete sidewalk. It builds up in us and pushes against the diaphragm. (the end of  liver/springtime energy channel) Emotionally we feel frustrated. Frustration is this powerful uprising creative energy- that’s stuck. What is called for is making room for more expression and possibly creating new ways of letting “it” out. Perhaps now is a good time to start writing down ideas and thinking about what you need to align in order to take effective action in the spring time.  Even if you can't take action, you can get out a pencil and paper and leave it on your desk.  Just leave it there so when an Idea comes, you’re ready.  Allow the bubbling and pushing of Spring to abide, knowing it is creating life.

Patience - Take a breath.  Flowers that pop up too early often don't make it due to an early refreeze.  If only they had waited! That is the lesson of patience. Though we are feeling the need to spring forward, we need to wait for the appropriate time, even though it can feel challenging.  That will ensure steady and healthy growth to maturity.  Remember, there is a time for every purpose under heaven.
Potent wildflowers. The view of the Five Elements recognizes the cycle of perpetual life giving. Water gives life to Wood, Winter gives life to Spring. And the deeper the winter the more powerful the spring.  If you have ever grown tulips, you know this first hand. With tulips, you have to emulate winter by storing the bulbs (in soil) in the freezer for a few months. Doing this creates healthy, vital flowers once they go in the ground for spring. It’s the same in us. A deep and still winter will allow for the birth of a powerful creative surge! Can you feel it?  It will be worth the cold and the wait.

I’m letting my planning for an upcoming course be fueled by these energies.  I am really looking forward to exploring Potential Energy, Creativity, Patience, and Potent Wildflowers in my Kundalini Yoga & Healing weekend intensive in April.  For all those who feel called to really take this deep and see where we can go together, I am excited to join you on this journey.

More info on the Spring Kundalini Yoga & Healing Immersion can be found here.

Meanwhile: turn this up loud and see how it feels, you’ll realize that you are not alone…

Hope too see you soon!

February Happenings!

Just know that whatever the groundhog declares on Sunday, the spring energy has already started to churn under our frosty soil.  Deep underground the sap is beginning to rise as internally we begin to feel that inner uprising energy.

Do you feel a readiness for the new?  This new beginning is why the Chinese celebrate
their New Year (also called the Spring Festival) now. So please feel free to go ahead and celebrate! And Happy New Year!

We have a couple events happening THIS weekend so come join us if you can. Today there will be a a free discussion focusing on life beyond addiction with Andrea. Andrea brings a whole-istic, grounded, and personal approach to a topic that affects all of us.

On Sunday we have a super fun Groundhog's Day celebration where we will be watching the movie Groundhog's Day while creating beautiful mandalas. (whats a mandala?)  Most of us have seen this before so it will a chance to sip tea, share snacks, and laugh.

All the details along with our other February happenings, including Sound Healing, Yoga on Point, 10 day Meditation Course, and Group Acupuncture Sessions (starting this coming week!) are below.

As many of our students know, our classes have been bursting at the seams. So we have taken your advice and will be limiting our class sizes a bit more. If you are immediatley interested in a class, we encourage you to sign up right away to reserve your spot.

Also read about Lance's upcoming Spring Kundalini Immersion Retreat. We know lots of you have been missing Lance's Kundalini Yoga classes. For the time being,  Lance will be offering powerful weekend Yoga and Healing intensives a few times per year. These immersions use all the tools that Lance offers and are aimed at providing the proper context for rich experience and powerful transformation. Remember Lance's classes are open to all levels of experience and  beginners are encouraged to attend!

Okay! Have a wonderful weekend and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

February Workshops

★ Beyond Addiction

with Andrea Tarka, M.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl.Ac.
Saturday, February 1st @ 1:30-3:00 pm

Addiction can be seen through many lenses and described in many ways, but I view addiction as a means to evaluate and interpret life from a very specific perspective. We tend to get caught up in our disease or our recovery, without recognizing our connection to the whole.

This discussion focuses on our life beyond addiction and how to discover who we are in the context of our journey, rather than live as victims of our experiences.

Although this talk is geared for those in recovery or active addiction, all are welcome, including family members and friends of those struggling with these same issues.

Saturday, February 1st @ 1:30-3:00 pm
Cost: FREE
Registration: Space is limited. | Email Us to Register

Should I go on a cleanse?

Should I go on a cleanse?...and I'm literally eating a piece of pizza (gluten free mind you) while I'm asking that question...Is it just me or does your mind work like that too?

Listen, we all want to eat well, look good, feel awesome, and perform amazingly. But even with the abundance of information available to us I still am not sure what is THE healthiest way to eat. Is it vegetarian? is it paleo? Is it a shake in the morning? When I go online, I find hundreds of different (and even opposing) recommended ways of eating that all say...this is it! This is the healthiest diet for you!

More often than not with my patients, I find that our diet is the most potent tool we have in our control that will create more health and vitality. The problem is changing our diet can be one of the hardest things to do.

That is why I invited Antanas, our resident nourishment expert, to speak about his take on it all and help us answer the fundamental question: How can I best nourish myself?

If you are interested in attending Antanas'  talk this coming Saturday please let us know. All the details are below in the workshop section! Also for a little more on Antanas read his recent blog post.

Hope to see you soon!
Love,
Lance

p.s. Jenni Kay wanted me to let you know that her mindfulness program will now start next week due to the snow. She has 1 spot open if anyone is interested. For more info please contact Jenni Kay!

On a personal note...

Jenni-Kay here. It is with much excitement and gratitude that I am offering the upcoming “Mindfulness for Everyday Life” 8 week program at Wayne Family Wellness.

This program is very special to me as it is the fruit of, not only my education and professional experience, but also my own personal healing journey. And, though it is challenging for me to be so personal in such a public forum, I want to share a little of my journey with you. My wish is that a glimmer of light will shine from my story and help others who may be suffering. So here it goes...

I spent most of my twentieth year of life curled up in a ball, weeping in the corner of my lightless bedroom.  Overcome with anxiety, riddled with panic, I hid from the world like a bear in hibernation.

This period of dark despair was preceded by an adolescence colored by chronic stress and anxiety. I pushed through the overwhelm with a calendar chock full of activity and an immoveable smile on my face.  The world saw a happy, perfect girl, but my insides were crumbling.

My body shut down under the pressure and I would have fainting spells, lasting two weeks at a time, landing me on the floor two or three times a day.  I began to believe that I was no good; that my body was my enemy; that life was never going to get better, and finally decided to stick to my dark bedroom.

I was twenty-one years old and on the brink of disappearing for good, when by some miracle I was introduced to a therapist who taught me how to breathe.  While it may sound simple, his gentle guidance saved my life.  I started counting my breaths and my bouts of panic slowly began to deescalate.  The fainting spells became shorter and I spent a little less time falling apart in the corner of my bedroom all alone.

Then yoga entered the scene.  When I laid down in relaxation pose at the end of my first class, my legs felt relaxed in a way that I had never experienced before.  Over the next several weeks, I started to realize that my body had the capacity to live.  I could stand without fainting.  I could move through postures – I had that ability.  I had the strength to stand and walk and so much more.

I threw my remaining medication in the trash (which I am not recommending here!) and allowed my breath to guide me back to balance.  With the support of my therapist and a few very close friends – who kept knocking on my door throughout my period of hiding – I learned that it was okay to tell my story, to own my experience, and that there was hope for me yet.

After a few rocky (let me be honest, very rocky) years of healing, I became a certified yoga instructor and clinical social worker/therapist with a deep and unshakeable desire to offer others the same space that I had been blessed with: a place to fall apart, to heal, to learn, a safe place to become more whole.

While my own healing journey is not complete, I am filled with gratitude that I’ve found balance, stability, and the tools that I need to be okay… and thrive.

We all have our painful stories that involve dark corners, weeping, and despair.  While our experiences are unique to each of us, most of us would agree that suffering alone by yourself is the greatest hell of all.

This is what drove me to create the "Mindfulness for Everyday Life" program. I am offering a healing relationship, a holding space, and powerful tools, to bring you to life even more fully.

If you are in any way curious about the program, join me for a FREE, 1 hour tele-course this Sunday, January 19th at 2pm, through which we will explore the topic of mindfulness and learn three techniques that will help you begin to feel better now.

There will also be time for you to ask questions about the upcoming “Mindfulness for Everyday Life” program that begins this coming Tuesday.

Check out the information below and let me know if you have any questions.

With love,

Jenni Kay

"The tools we have been given in this [mindfulness] class have helped me to turn down the volume and deal with and reduce the effects of stress.  Great class." - Steve
"Jenni Kay brings such genuine warmth, passion, love, and skill to the work that she does; you will be soothed by her presence!  She skillfully integrates her work as a therapist and yoga/meditation teacher in ways that address the whole person, and creates a safe environment where people can be exactly as they are." - Ashley
"Throughout the short four months that I’ve known Jenni Kay, she has taught me so much about my mind and my body’s relationship to one another through yoga, meditation, and mindfulness. As a trauma survivor, this has been and will continue to be a crucial element in my personal growth and healing. As my teacher and as my friend, she has taught me that it’s safe to be as I am, wherever I am, and that my mind and my body can heal themselves if given the proper care. Jenni Kay is a gentle, sturdy soul, and has been my teacher inside and outside of the classroom."  -Trish
