Howdy Folks!

How crazy was the weather this weekend? Im excited because it was such a great and rare example of a particular energetic relationship in Five Element Acupuncture theory; Fire within Water, Summer within Winter.  The questions is how can this relationship help you?

In general the qualities that really struck me as i was out and about were those of joy, connectivity, and openness. Did you feel that at all?

There is an AMAZING point on the inside of our foot called "Blazing Valley" (Kidney 2) which really captures these qualities. Blazing Valley is the fire point within the winter channel (Kidney) and it brings warmth and connection to the cold. Heres a pic just incase you want to give it a little rub =)

This beautiful point brings warmth to cold/contraction and can be used to also clear excess heat in the body.

On the physical level Blazing Valley can help treat symptoms like, insomnia, night sweats, sore throat, dryness, asthma, itching, coldness, and can help a lot with fertility. (for both men and women!)

On the emotional level this point helps to ease fright, anxiety, and nervousness. It can help someone "frozen in fear" or unable to experience joy. 

On the highest level Blazing Valley can help us if we are feeling isolated and disconnected. This point powerfully reminds us of the qualities of warmth, love, trust, closeness, comfort, security, and relaxation. 

Pretty Amazing right!? And now that you know this point, try massaging it when you are feeling a little down in the dumps, disconnected, or need a little Summer in your Winter =)!

We are Moving!

We are Moving!

Hi Folks!

I hope your weekend was just what you needed. Although out of the ordinary, I enjoyed this amazing weather and the flowers blooming! Speaking of flowers blooming, it is with great joy and a touch of sadness that I announce that we are moving to new space! 

Our current building is going to be torn down and turned into condos. I guess everything has it's own karma. I have searched hard and long and finally, after too many boring office parks and sterile medical building tours, I found an amazing, warm, cozy, bright, healing sanctuary just a few miles away, in Berwyn, to continue our journey in! 

The Details:

When? All Sessions in Berwyn will begin February 1st 2016

Where? 6 Waterloo Ave. Berwyn, PA 19312.

It's right next door to Clay's Bakery (apparently amazing) and directly across Lancaster ave from the Berwyn train station. AND We have plenty of parking in lots directly across the street and on the side of our building. 

Who? All of us! Meghan, Kara, and Kylee are all coming along too AND we now will have space for even more amazing practitioners. 

Am I changing the name? Yes! I will be changing the name of our wellness center for 2 reasons. 
1. We will no longer be in Wayne
2. (This is really exciting!) Because I will be merging our practice with another practice! We haven't quite settled on a new name yet, but I would LOVE your ideas or suggestions. I will also set up a poll on our Facebook Page to get some feedback in the next week

What else?

Our final event at 124 Bloomingdale...

  • The Gong meditation class at 124 Bloomingdale is coming up Friday the 18th (details below). Hope you can make it!

Okay...I'm (reluctantly) getting out of this super cozy chair...

Okay...I'm (reluctantly) getting out of this super cozy chair...

I hope you had a wonderful week!end! My highlight was sitting in my wife's electric blanketed comfy chair (its so freaking amazing).  My lowlight was getting out of it.  There is so much going on and so much to do! I don't know about you but I'm definitely starting to notice the opposing forces of Nature vs. Culture.  I want to relax and slow down and I also want to make a lot of plans and travel and cook!

Here are 4 ideas that can help us stay in the flow: 

1. Listen to our body - if I'm tired, I sleep/nap - I know, I know you hear me say it all the time- but i think its the most import thing we can do! Do you know that most of us actually need more sleep in the winter - its biology - think about it - we have had electric lights for less than 200 years - we've been around for about 300,000 - before electric light it was common to go to sleep soon after sunset and arise after sunrise - this means more sleep in winter (like 10 hours) and less in summer (like 7 hours). 

2. Meditate. The letting go and stillness present in nature makes this a great time of year to get good at sitting still.  If you’ve been thinking about starting or restarting a meditation practice, now is an auspicious time. There are so many benefits to this simple practice and I really want as many people as possible to get support in meditation.  I have a  10 day downloadable meditation course that a lot of people seem to have gotten some real value out of, check it out if you haven’t yet! I’m proud of it.

3, Be Consciously more Grateful. Again no better time for gratitude than Thanksgiving right? - Spend 5 minutes EVERY day this week immersed in the feeling (real or made-up) of deep gratitude. Try it before you check your email in the morning from you phone in bed. If you’re like me an you use your phone (set to airplane mode) as your clock by your bed, set your lock screen to the word gratitude***. Then when you check the time when you wake up, You’ll be reminded to just close your eyes for a few more minutes and be curious about how much gratitude you might be capable of. Even Oprah raves about it.  =)

4. Adopt a Spirit of Generosity Year Round: Ok, this one takes some planning for it to be applicable right now, but what would it look like if you sincerely adopted an outlook on the world that moved through goodness.  Practically speaking, if I see something that I think would be a great present for a friend, I just get it. And then SURPRISE! I just gift it to them! It’s also wonderful to be on the receiving end of this phenomenon. I feel like gifts are about appreciation -  and the holiday season doesn’t have to be a contrived moment of generosity.

Why are some people mean?

This morning, I overheard Luna (my 5 year old) ask her mom, "Why are some people mean?" to which Amy responded "They forget that we are all connected."

I thought this was the most amazing response. And the more I thought about it the more profound it became. Violence and hatred stem from disconnection, from separation. We fear the other, the one who is different, the one we don't know.  

With such horrible violence happening around the world what can we, as individuals, do to help?

I think one powerful way is through fostering the remembrance of connection; connection to self, connection to other, to neighbor, to stranger, to animal, to plant, to rock, to earth, to the universe.

These are my thoughts of the moment.

60% of my patients come in for help with this 1 symptom

Hope your weekend has been spectacular! 

I took a stroll in the Wissahickon this morning with the crisp air, the colors and some other wise humans enjoying this incredible fall weather.

The night before, I attended the wedding of a high school friend. As small talk gets to going, I found myself being asked why people come in for acupuncture and I was actually quite surprised by my response. See, when I started my practice, 90% of my patients came in for pain related disorders. But now, 15 years later, I would say 60-70% of my patients come in for 1 symptom...anxiety.  

So many of us are stressed to the max and our nervous systems are simply overwhelmed. Acupuncture initially gained fame for it’s ability to treat pain effectively, but more and more research shows undeniable results with anxiety.

As my patients know, treating anxiety is possible through the powerful healing partnership that is developed. Half of the work required to remedy anxiety is done in the treatment room. The other 50%, and perhaps the most important for long term results, comes from little choices we make every day. 

Below are 5 examples of small changes we can all make to help when we feel overwhelmed, have a tight or heavy chest, and/or have obsessive thought patterns. 

1. Remember anxiety is a symptom of something else. Your heart beating rapidly and your head starting to swim is an alarm signal. Our body/mind is getting is to pay attention to something. Your body is wise, and your symptoms are teachers. What do you think they are trying to teach you?

2. Breathe Deep. Even if you don't feel like it, and perhaps especially when you don’t feel like it. If you can’t do a few minutes, just take 1 deep breath. It will change your body’s chemistry to help bring balance to the nervous and endocrine systems. 

3. Cut out refined sugar. This drug has become so accepted in society it’s hard to see it for what it is.  Try cutting out sugar and see for yourself the DRAMATIC effects on your symptoms.

4. Drink More Water. To stay properly hydrated, you should drink 1/2 your bodyweight in ounces of water each day. You will be amazed at what not being dehydrated does to you! 

5. Get Good Sleep. Our bodies are very responsive to the basics: Sleep in a pitch black room, turn off your screens an hour or 2 before bed. Go to bed when you FIRST get tired (even if its 7:30 pm)! And know that it’s natural to sleep more in the winter and less in the summer.

If you don’t live under the thumb of anxiety but feel your quality of life could be better, try implementing these recommendations just for this week. See what changes...maybe nothing....maybe EVERYTHING!

5. Making YUMMY Paleo CHILI in the crock pot. 
heres the recipe:
brown 2 lbs grass fed ground beef, 1 red onion, and 3 cloves garlic
put it in a crock pot with 2-3 TB of each Chili powder, coriander, parsley, cumin, oregano, fresh cilantro, chopped celery and carrots, 24 oz of crushed tomatoes, 1 sweet pepper,  Salt and Pepper, and Jalapeño (if you like spicy ).
Let it all cook on low for 4-5 hours. Top it with some roasted sunflower seeds and ENJOY!!

I Felt Pretty Famous on Saturday

Hi!

I felt pretty famous on Halloween =) multiple people stopped me in the street and asked if they could take  pictures with me and our bloom of Jellyfish =) check out a pic of out costume down below =)

Lets Celebrate Philadelphia's 333rd birthday together! Did you now Mayor Nutter proclaimed October 27th as A Day of Kindness to honor the 333rd Birthday of Philadelphia?

The Day was Inspired by the Dalai Llama, who, though he had to cancel his visit for health reasons, wanted his followers to do something meaningful and inspirational for the people of Philly.  
So what can you do today that will create a contagious energy of kindness?

Important update about Wayne Family Wellness & A Request

Hope you are having a great Fall experience this weekend! (Remember to take your plants inside – there's a frost warning tonight!) I had a blast at the annual Harry Potter Festival in Chestnut Hill with Amilda Longbottom and a young Professor McGonagall on Saturday! 

You can see that unsuspecting muggle next to these witches was taken a bit off guard! Good thing a young Gryffindor was standing by, keeping cool. 

A Note from Amilda Longbottom: There is nothing quite like the wonderful world of Harry Potter. Walking around amongst my fellow witches and wizards made the world feel special, feel Alive.  So many people said ‘Hi’ to me and smiled and waved.  Perhaps I should wear my cape more often because the truth is that the world IS special and alive. Magic always feels closer in the fall.  Something about the leaves changing color and the angle of the light makes more possible.

Fall is indeed a magical time and one to let go of what no longer serves us. I have been stewing over a growth opportunity and have been inspired by the participants of our 10 day Courage Challenge to share it here.

Wayne Family Wellness is looking for a new home! Our current house is being sold with plans to demolish the building and replace it with 5 condos. The township has approved the zoning/permit requests from the builder but the settlement date has yet to be announced. ::bites nails::

We MAY have to be out by December, maybe January or it could be another year, but its hard to have that unsettled feeling. Also, when things like this happen, I like to take the opportunity to refine my vision and truly create what it is I want to manifest in this world. I have been looking for new properties for the last 6 months, but have yet to find something suitable. 

My request is that if you have or know of a great space in the area that would could be a happy home for our wellness center please let me know! I’m  looking for something unique. Ideally it's homey, warm, natural feeling and has space for at least three treatment rooms. 

In the meantime I’m so grateful for the beautiful space we have been in for over 7 years now. Once I find our new home, I’m thinking a party will be in order! I'll send an update when I find our new and improved home!

Happy Fall Equinox Ladies and Gents!

It is so freaken' beautiful outside, isn't it? And I have no doubt a few of you are probably feeling the loss of summer. Its such a natural part of the energetic cycle that, in Chinese medicine, the emotion of grief is associated with this time of year, the time of  Metal. 

Lets walk through it and ill explain (AND if you make it all the way to the bottom there is an amazing audio excerpt to listen to)..In Nature, Autumn grants the opportunity to shed what is no longer absolutely essential. The energy (qi) of our brothers and sisters of the plant world, turns inward and descends deep down into their roots. The trees let go of the survival non-essentials and so their leaves fall to the ground creating space for new growth AND rich fertilizer for the future generations. The descent of Qi also allows for rest and rejuvenation during the upcoming Winter months and this stillness and space, in turn, creates a powerful potential energy that is explosively released with the crack of Springtime. 

What is so cool (and often forgotten) is that we ARE nature. We too have the Autumn movement that courses through us. In Five Element Medicine we call this kind of movement the Metal Element. This part  of the cycle  within creates our ability to let go of what no longer serves so that we too can make room for rest, rejuvenation and eventually the re-birth of own new power and possibilities. 
 

In nature the metal element also represented by the crystals and minerals that make up the air we breath and the soil our food grows in. Like these metal elements there is a special kind of reflective feeling that the Fall offers us. In many traditions, including Taoist and Jewish, Fall is the time when the heavens and earth are closest together. A time when we can almost touch the spirit world, a time of deepest connection to our ancestors, those we have lost, those who have come before us. The Fall offers us a powerful opportunity to deeply grieve that which, and those who, we have lost and also offers us space to give thanks and praise for that which is, and those who are, currently in our life. 

 

Emotionally, this phase of the cycle gives us our sense of self-worth, vitality and resolve. It shows up as our grief, our praise and our sense of awe

 

Physically, Metal movement within builds our Lungs, the part of us that takes in vital energy oxygen and lets go of the waste carbon dioxide. It also shows up as our Large Intestine, which both lets go of our rubbish and also intakes the last remains of any essential nutrients.

Spiritually, the Metal energy gives us the ability to let go, reflect and create space. It offers us the chance to get in touch with our spiritual energy and realize our core values. Metal reminds us of the heavens and our connection to our higher self. 

 

In Five Element Medicine the goal is to keep the energy moving through this natural cycle of seasons. When it gets stuck thats when dis-ease, pain or upset occur.

When Metal is out of balance we may feel excessive grief, deep depression, low self-esteem, low self-worth, emotional withdrawal and excessive materialism. We may not be able to recover from a loss or be inspired. We may have difficulty breathing, unhealthy skin or bowel issues. 

 

When Metal is in balance we have the gifts of awe, letting go, acknowledgment, respect, inspiration, preciousness and acceptance. 

 

If your Fall energy or Metal element is feeling stuck HERE ARE A FEW PRACTICES that can help!  put them to action for this week and notice how it feels!

  • BREATHE! Go outside, preferably in a natural setting, and allow your lungs to INSPIRE! Sit on a log, a rock or the earth and breathe in and out through the nose slowly and deeply for 11 minutes. As you inhale focus on bringing in that which you desire and as you exhale focus on letting go of that which no longer serves you.
  • POOP! Sorry if I grossed you out =) In Five Element Acupuncture the best time to poop is 5-7 am, when your Qi is focused in the Large Intestines. So for a week create some time between 5 and 7, wake up early if you need to....Find a good book, magazine or just meditate and LET GO! Give yourself plenty of time - at least 11 minutes, no need to rush these things. p.s. This is a particularly good homework for those who have troubles in this area...Extra Credit goes to those who go outside, dig a hole and squat =)
  • CLEAN HOUSE! You've heard of spring cleaning...now try fall cleaning! Go through your old stuff and get rid of that which you no longer want or need. Those clothes that are too big for you now that you've lost all that weight, those keepsakes from the 3rd grade, that piece of furniture you hate...Whatever... create space in your home = create space in your life! There are plenty of places that will accept donations or check out www.freecycle.com

I had an epiphany yesterday! Lately, I've been feeling lazy and it dawned on me yesterday that this time of year is all about grand contentment. I'm in sync with nature!   =)

I was talking to my friend Cassidy yesterday morning as our kids played in the shade of a beautiful Japanese Maple when it struck me. Cassidy asked what I had been up to and I responded, reluctantly, "to tell you the truth I have been feeling really lazy." He said, "You know another way of saying that is 'I have been feeling unproductive.'" And thats when it hit me! Oh yeah, it's actually okay to just BE!

In general, as a culture we are trained to be top level producers; we are fully focused on creating, working, and doing, and of course thats not necessarily a bad thing. It's that creativity that drives evolutionary development and brings improvement in our lives and to our world. What I forgot was that there is a time for BEING! That it is actually okay and even necessary to STOP and enjoy the sweetness of knowing you have everything you need. The harvest is in.  

Five Element Acupuncture theory reminds us that we are one with nature and that we follow energetic movements similar to the seasons.  Late Summer, represented by the Earth Element, is our secret 5th season in Five Element Acupuncture Theory. Its a sweet and nurturing time of year isn't it? The fruit is sweet, the air is sweet, even the light is sweet, right!? And best of all we have a surplus of yummy fruits and veggies, the sweet gifts from the growth and busyness of Spring and Summer. 

So how does this the energetic movement of Earth and Late Summer show up in us? 

When our earth energy is in balance we have the gifts of nurturing, thoughtfulness, nourishment, taste, sympathy, stability and home.  

When the Late Summer energy within us gets out of balance we can feel obsessive worry or sympathy. We may feel self-centered or insecure, not able to give or receive help or care from others. We may feel a lack of abundance, like we don't have enough. On a physical level we may experience, muscle pain, digestive problems, ulcers, headaches or even cancer. We may also find it hard to lose or gain weight.

In 5 element medicine the goal is to keep the energy moving through this natural cycle of seasons. This will help to imbue us with the gifts of the elements. 

If your Late Summer energy or Earth element is feeling stuck here are a few practices that can help:

1. GIVE! Lend a helping hand to a neighbor in need; give a random gift to someone in your life; volunteer your time at a homeless shelter or food kitchen; Give out hugs; Literally feed your partner or friend =)

2. GRATITUDE! Keep a daily gratitude journal; Give thanks to mama earth and the creatures on her for providing your food before you eat; When you say "Thank You" look the person in the eye and mean it from your heart.  Look for more information on the September Gratitude Challenge.

3. RECEIVE! Consciously accept the thank yous, gifts and offerings of others; Be aware of the processes of taking in food, chewing and digesting; When someone gives you a hug, shakes your hand or gives you a high five..What is it like to really take it in?

We had SUCH fun and felt so good with the water challenge that we have added a new monthly challenge series called Let's Get Healthy Together! All the challenges will be Virtual, Free, and have Prizes...all to strengthen the ultimate mission of Wayne Family Wellness...To help dramatically improve our patients', clients', and students' quality of life!
