Get to Know Your Acupuncture Points! HEART 9 - Rekindle Joy & Foster Life Direction

This Acupressure series will include acupressure points that you can stimulate yourself. It’s well known that acupuncture can help with physical pain but 75% of my patients come to see me for mental, emotional, and spiritual pain. Stress, anxiety, depression and nervous system overwhelm run rampant in our day and age. Stimulating simple acupuncture points can provide a mysteriously powerful bout of relief.

Thank you to Sheila Z. my hand model!

Thank you to Sheila Z. my hand model!

The Point: Heart 9 - Little Rushing In

Description; Ht 9 is the wood element point on the fire element channel. Stimulating this point is like adding wood to a fire. On the level of our experience, the equivalent is bringing  the qualities of vision and clarity to our heart’s mission. This point helps to rekindle joy and foster warmth and lightness in us. In addition Little Rushing in reminds us of trust -  it brings a feeling of safety and ease as you would experience around a campfire at night.  (read more about the specific qualities of the elements in Lance's Five Element ebook)

Location: on the dorsal aspect and radial side of the little finger at the base of the nail.

Indications: Feeling of sadness, directionless-ness, emotional and physical exhaustion, or    depression. Also used for delirium, seizures, stroke, loss of consciousness, heart palpitations  - however if any of these symptom are present please call 911 or seek medical attention asap.

How to activate these acupressure points:

  1. Focus your attention on the point
  2. Using your finger or eraser end of a pencil, slowly apply pressure to the point
  3. Slowly increase your pressure on the point and add movement
  4. Stimulate the point anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes
  5. You can do this as needed or try daily for 1 week as an experiment
  6. Notice how you feel

How acupuncture points work to help with depression

One way to think about acupuncture is that it stimulates the electric flow (Qi energy) of the body. Qi flows in circuits in the body we call meridians. The Qi pools up in certain places along the meridians - these little whirlpools we call acupuncture points and each have a unique function. The needles or pressure stimulate these points and help to create movement, bring balance to our entire system, and also remind us of our innate gifts.

If you would like to experience the benefits of acupuncture,  you can schedule an appointment using our online booking system. If you would like a referral for an acupuncturist near you just let us know where you are located!

A little bit of magic for your day...

Summer is surely in the air. I got to go camping over the weekend with Luna (my 5 year old daughter) in Massachusetts this past weekend, while Amy assisted in a course with her teacher Don Oscar Miro-Quesada. Magic was everywhere and some of it actually got photographed: check out this  Luna Moth sighting.

It was a rich time and Amy is looking forward to sharing the magic with us during the Summer Solstice Mugwort Harvest Event on the 19th! Everyone is invited - we will be creating sacred space outdoors, befriending and harvesting mugwort to make smudge sticks or dream medicine and of course, we will have a fire to celebrate the height of the cycle of seasons. The event will also have great music by Raji Malik and Ron Kravitz

In the spirit of Alignment you may also consider joining our Kundalini Yoga and Gong Sound Journey Class for Friday 17th. Space is filling up quickly (4 spots left) so reserve your space now.

Finally, our Practitioner Spotlight this month is the amazing Susan Watson! Susan is a gifted healer and seasoned shiatsu teacher and practitioner. After a session with her you will feel open and high! If you want to schedule, you are in luck - she just added another full day to her schedule. Susan has hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Click here to book

Lots of Love,

and on behalf of the all the practitioners at Village Wellness!

P.S. If you know you need an evening session (after 4pm) with Damini or myself, we recommend you book ahead for a few session to ensure you have your preferred appointment time as our summer schedules seem to be filling up - thanks so much!

Interview with Sharon Hicks, Zero Balancing Practitioner

This is part of a series of interviews I am conducting with practitioners of holistic medicine. I find that folks who are drawn to help others in this less-conventional field truly are ignited with a deep passion and purpose. These interviews were created to delve into that drive.

Sharon Hicks is a Zero Balancing Practitioner, Yoga Teacher, Occupational Therapist, and Artist on the Main Line, Philadelphia. She is founder Sharon Hicks Therapeutics™ along with a rehab affiliate and Research Fellow at the Main Line Health System.

Enjoy the interview!

Lance

Q: Where did you grow up?
SHARON: I was born in Chicago and moved to Bala Cynwyd with my family when I was 5. I have lived on the Main Line ever since then. Throughout the years, I frequented Jamaica West Indies, my maternal homeland. Although I did not grow up there I have always considered Jamaica a home away from home.

Q: How did you end up doing what you do?
SHARON: It was a series of amazing experiences which led me to where I am now. My father used to take me to the Chicago Art Institute on Saturdays when I was about 3 years old. And when I was sixteen he took me to an intensive meditation course, this was my first introduction to the concepts of controlling the mind, positive thoughts, and “relaxing for survival”. Later, after graduating from Tyler School of Art I had the good fortune to be hired by the Barnes Foundation’s director of education Violette de Mazia, as her personal secretary. I spent many years directly learning in the presence of one of the world’s finest art collections and at the same time not just learning about art but learning to be really present with art. It was de Mazia who introduced me to the concepts of the “here and now” and “learning to see” the art in art and the art in life. I believe it was this experience that led me down the road of life-long learning and led me to vision therapy which along with my earlier meditation background led me to yoga.  I’ve studied with pioneers in the field of vision and been able to follow my interests. As I became aware of the interconnection of art, yoga and vision I began to tie it all together for a holistic approach, Personal Vision™.  My journey led me back to school with the knowledge that occupational therapy would become an umbrella for my background experiences, would support my desire to keep learning, and to help others.  When working as an OT became demanding on me and my own health, I further explored the healing arts, ways to care for myself and for my patients. I was drawn to Svaroopa yoga, Zero Balancing, and most recently Wisdom of the Earth medicinal essences. While vision seemed to be a connecting thread in my earlier years, Muktananda has been a connection in my recent years. Unknowingly, I was drawn to his disciples, or they were drawn to me. The creators of Svaroopa yoga and Zero Balancing both studied with Muktananda; a yoga student and client of mine had studied with Muktananda; and most recently I discovered my Wisdom of the Earth teacher also had meditated in Muktananda’s Ashram where he singled her out in a crowd of over 100 people to provide her with Shaktipat. Perhaps the universe is guiding me to do what I do, or this is all part of a divine plan.

Q: Why do you do what you do?
SHARON: I’ve always had a yearning for harmony. My love of art and contemplation came to me through my father while my passion for helping others came to me through my mother. Like many people I’ve had my own share of challenges. It is my own healing and learning journey that provides me the tools to help others. At the same time I believe in giving back that which has been given. We all have gifts and I endeavor to use mine to help others.

Q: What is your mission with the work you do?
SHARON: My mission is to support and facilitate vision, body, spirit, and life holistic harmony.

Q: What is your goal when you are working with your clients?
SHARON: My goal is always to be as present as possible with my clients and to support them in their process of healing, learning, creativity, and/or growth. I am interested in helping people realize their potential and meet their own meaningful goals.

Q: What are some habits/ lifestyle recommendations you want to offer the world?
SHARON:
Slow down and be present, with people, with nature, with yourself
Cut back on electronics, cell phones, computers, TV
Look and listen from a place of not knowing, from an open mind
Take time for your own self care, schedule it in every day

Q: Do you have a spiritual practice? if so what is it?
SHARON: My practice includes meditation and yoga, painting and art making, walking in nature. Just being still or focusing on an uplifting thought or word, processing emotions, self expression, any process that goes beyond the necessary functional stuff, to include what matters to the heart, I consider spiritual. I consider the process toward harmony to be spiritual in nature. It takes awareness and practice to live from a place of love, peace, light, joy, and truth, our highest self, our spirit. The thing about spiritual practice is that its form continually changes; it’s keeping the intention to live from that higher self and from the heart, continually realizing the oneness of everything.

Q: What does your morning routine look like?
SHARON: Most days I wake up at 6 a.m. and use 30 to 45 minutes just for myself in stillness. This time is used to meditate, for gentle yoga, for self care, self reflection, and sometimes self expression through writing or drawing. After that I have my breakfast, shower and get on with my day.

Q: What book do you  give away most?
John Dewey’s Art as Experience is a book that was very meaningful to me as a young artist and one that I’ve given away.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote?
SHARON:
“To see is to perceive what is significant in a given situation from a particular point of interest" – Violette de Mazia

“To send light into the darkness of men’s hearts—such is the duty of the artist”   (Schumann, 1810/1856).

Q: What are you currently most passionate about?
SHARON: I think I am currently most passionate about helping people to de-stress. I see a lot of people who have had life changing trauma or have a chronic condition - they have several things in common: their nervous system is stuck in the fight and flight, their mind is busy, yet they have a hard time concentrating, they don’t sleep well, they also may have physical pain or dysfunction. Teaching people to relax and care for themselves is really at the heart of what I do. Meditation is huge. I am currently passionate about Zero Balancing because when teaching someone to relax is just not enough, or when pain is not going away, ZB quickly brings a person to a deep relaxed state and also helps to release tension and trauma.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
SHARON: Whenever I have free time I go to my studio and paint.

Q: What do you like to do for fun?
SHARON: I like to take walks with my family and I especially like to walk on the beach. Making art is fun for me. I am also passionate about learning and any kind of experiential class is fun for me.

Q: Who is/are your hero/s
SHARON: My mother is my hero. After she worked as a physical therapist for 20 years she completed medical school at age 50. She is a nephrologist who essentially saves lives every day.   She is now turning 80 and still loves her work. Her passion for helping others is an inspiration.

the gift of a snowy spring day

the gift of a snowy spring day

Hi Everyone!

What weird weather we’ve had! I’ve had to use my winter coat far longer than I had planned but with the snow yesterday, I couldn’t go without it! Thankfully, all of this cooky weather was charted out and understood by the ancient Chinese mystics and their wisdom has survived for thousands of years.

Through 5-element acupuncture theory, we understand that we are part of the natural cycle, influenced by it and also not separate from it. That means that what happens outside also happens internally. When it snows in the spring time, or it turns to winter in the spring, we call that the water within the wood. This energetic helps foster growth and flexibility internally. A plant that survives this freeze and thaw will be much stronger as it endures the coming weather, pests, and climate variations. And that strength will get passed to the next generation of plants. The same is true for people. When we can endure the darkness and stillness and perhaps fear and anxiety of an unexpected change in our plans, we strengthen our adaptability. There’s even an acupuncture point that is exactly this energetic - water with the wood!

The point called Crooked Spring (Liver 8).  Key words for this point are Adaptation, Invigoration, and Flexibility. The following is how I use this point with my patients:

Mind: To clear anger that is rooted in fear, irritability, jealousy, and/or depressio

Body: To increase flexibility, help tight tendons, stiffness, knee pain, and headaches

Spirit: To help when you feel stuck or are in overwhelm this point creates more flexibility to move around very stubborn obstacles in your life

In general I see more patients expressing either great discomfort or relief along the spectrum of what we would call Wood (Spring). During the Springtime some people experience more stiffness in joints and muscles, and mood. For others, this time of year brings more relief from chronic stiffness and inflexibly.

Lessons, like weather, can be unpleasant to endure - especially when we are ready for the warmer weather — but there are real gifts present as well. Each and every aspect of the seasonal cycle can model how we can be more in tune with ourselves and our world.

Have an amazing week!

Love,

Lance

{April} Holistic Happenings on the Philly Mainline

Howdy Folks!

When I was an acupuncture student, many moons ago, there was a quote hanging in the student clinic that read "Every blade of grass has an angel that bends over it and whispers, 'Grow! Grow!’" This quote imprinted on me and resurfaces in my mind now and again.

When I am in touch with my true nature, I experience a potent urge to grow, to learn, to get better, to evolve. And when faced with challenges or intense life circumstances, like a blade of grass pushing its way through the concrete sidewalk, I remember that quote and I tap into this innate courage and creative, evolutionary spirit of nature that lives inside all of us.

Growth is particularly accessible to us here in spring time. The winter is giving way to the sunshine and under the right circumstances, we will sprout! We have wonderful classes and workshops and growth opportunities coming up this month — I hope that you can join us for some or all of them!

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Blossoming Love,

Lance's Spring Letter 2016

Lance's Spring Letter 2016

In spite of our recent cold spell (and apparently more snow coming tonight), new life is being created right before our eyes!

From the deep, quiet and cold stillness of winter, nature, now a little warmer and sunnier, is exploding with new life. Shoots are forcing their way through the soil and leaves are popping out of their buds. Go for a walk in the woods and you will see some bright new leaves popping out and you'll hear birds chirping. Spring is a time of birth, new life, new possibilities. The vision and potential of the acorn seed is following its plan and beginning to turn earth and the elements into a beautiful oak tree.

As humans living busy and technological lives, its easy to forget that we too are part of this cycle of nature. We too have the springtime energy within us. We create new life, give birth to creative projects, make plans and follow through. We have the same flexibility of a tree that finds its way towards the sun no matter what obstacles are in its path. We have the same power of a blade of grass pushing through a cement sidewalk.

In 5 element acupuncture the goal is to keep the energy moving through this natural cycle. When it gets stuck, that's when dis-ease, pain or upset occur. When the powerful uprising spring energy (wood element) within us gets stuck we have particular experiences. For example on the physical level we may feel like our tendons and muscles are tight, we may get one-sided headaches or migraines, vision problems or trouble sleeping. We may get angry or frustrated, or  we may lack vision, flexibility, or creativity.

When in balance the springtime energy within brings us the gifts of humility, planning, decision making, clear perception, creativity, appropriate anger, justice, vision and flexibility.

If your springtime energy or wood element is feeling stuck here are a couple exercises that can help!

  • Meditate! Set your alarm for 20 minutes, sit up straight, be still, relax, and pay attention. If you want to learn with me - i offer 2 ways: in person (starting tomorrow!) or online (use the newsletter member discount code: "meditate50" )

  • Create! even if you are not inspired, just start a creative project. write, draw, dance, sing, paint. You will see the creative juice begin to flow before your eyes!

  • Cleanse! Its a kind of "internal" spring cleaning! Spring is the perfect time to lighten the body and clear some of our winter storage. Some simple tips:  Eat lighter, include spring greens, and take a break from the sugar and processed foods. We also still have some room in our 21 Day Nutritionist Guided Spring CleanseSpring Clean! includes Private nutritional consults, Group support, and even Yoga and Acupuncture! note: The early bird discount ends soon (more info below)

If you have been receiving seasonal acupuncture treatments, now is the perfect time to come in for your spring session. We can help bring smooth movement and new life to your body, mind and soul! Please feel free to use the handy Online Scheduler. If you are new to acupuncture now is the perfect time to spring into sessions, give us a call at (610) 203-3747 or book online to set up your initial appointment =) Also if you know anyone who may be interested please feel free to pass on this newsletter! Is the uprising energy of Spring effecting your emotions yet?🌱

I’m psychic. Ready? Recently you have been feeling a little more antsy, a bit more frustrated, and maybe just a tad easier to anger... right? The Spring Qi has risen and we are all immersed in it! I guess the groundhog was right — spring has sprung. Even the cherry blossoms are blooming one month early!

If you are feeling frustrated now, here are 2 miracle practices that will help!

1. Breathe! Yup. It’s magical - try this: set your timer for 7 minutes. Imagine your belly is a bellow. As you open up your belly the air get sucked in through your nose. As you close the belly the air gets pushed out. Slowly and deeply continue to inhale and exhale, until your timer goes off.

2. Shout! The best place for this one is in the car with no one else around (otherwise your office mates may think you’re a bit strange). It’s simple: as powerfully as you can, shout the word "Har" from your gut. Use the same belly movement as the breathing technique above and create the sound when you pull the navel center back in. Keep shouting until you laugh! HAR!

Try it. You might like it!

Below are our upcoming events including a brand new Guided Spring Cleanse with Rachel and myself!

Hope you have an amazing, creative, and emergent week!

See you soon!

Your bud, (get it?)

Welcome Functional Nutritionist, Rachel Hershberger

We are thrilled to introduce you to our newest holistic medicine practitioner, Functional Nutritionist, Rachel Hershberger!

Rachel holds a Masters Degree in Nutrition and Integrative Health from the Maryland University of Integrative Health. Her expertise ranges from fine-tuning everyday nutrition to offering holistic and integrative support through chronic illness including IBS, cancer, MS, RA, other autoimmune conditions,  and Lyme Disease. With her unique Masters level training, previous mentorship with leaders in the integrative nutrition field, Rachel brings a unique skill-set. She is an exceptionally gifted nutritionist and healer and we are so lucky to have her on the mainline at Village Wellness.

About Functional Nutrition

Functional Nutrition is a holistic* style of nutrition that focuses on building health by restoring proper physiological functioning of the body. Seemingly unrelated signs and symptoms give clues about the underlying cause of illness or disease. When pieced together these signs and symptoms offer a full picture of the root cause(s) and the appropriate nutritional and lifestyle support necessary to restore vitality.

What a Functional Nutrition Session with Rachel looks like

During the initial 1.5 hour consult, you will have an opportunity to discuss your personal story, health history, current diet, symptoms, upsets, any lab work, along with your lifestyle and health goals. Rachel will create a personalized plan and specific recommendations for you from this session.

Once you have completed this initial session. You will be able to register for the Functional Nutrition Program which includes bi-weekly hour long visits along with ongoing support and guidance. The length of the program is dependent on your individual needs, but usually 3-6 months.

*What does Holistic Mean?

“The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts”

In modern Western medicine, we tend to treat parts of a person- dividing up care and denying the interconnectedness of our bodies. Holistic means that the person as a whole is treated, with attention paid to all aspects of the human experience- biological, psychological, social, spiritual and environmental.

Who is Functional Nutrition for?

Functional nutrition is design to support you wherever you are. Some clients are simply looking to feel more energy, have improved sleep, and experience more vibrancy. Other clients are looking for support as they heal from chronic diseases like cancer (or cancer treatments), MS, or Lyme disease. Because Functional Nutrition takes into account the individual circumstances and unique situations of each client it can be a wonderfully integrated into other therapies, western or eastern.

Get Started this month with a Special Invitation.

Getting started is easy. Simply Access Rachel's schedule to book online.

Special Invititation:

Book your initial appointment in March to receive 30% off your initial consult. To use this discount simply add a note saying 'Newsletter Invite' when you book your appointment.

Celebrating BIG LOVE - Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentines Day!

If you step just to the side of the narrative of Valentine’s day, you’ll find everyone is seeking to honor one of the most unifying and foundational energies in all of creation. Sure, it’s a hallmark holiday, and whether you celebrate, tolerate or loathe Valentine's Day it’s a great reminder of Big Love!

What is Big Love? One of the best explanations I’ve heard was in a conference room with world renowned quantum physicist, Hans Peter Durr.  He was talking about the universe and connectivity. To demonstrate his take on it all, he passed around a ball of yarn, asking the first participant to hold the end (or the beginning) of the yarn and then pass it to the left, on and on around the room until everyone was holding on to one tiny part of what everyone else was holding on to. He said this represented the universe. As it was being unwound and passed from from participant to participant he told us to pay close attention to the yarn, really taking it in — all the way down to the tiniest little fuzz. Then he had us roll the ball of yarn back up and in his Einstein-like german accent (and I'm paraphrasing) "So what’s holding this ball of yarn together? The little tiny, seemingly insignificant bits of Fuzz! What is holding the universe together? Love! Love is the fuzz that holds life together!”

The Big Love I'm talking about is the tiny fuzz. It’s the stuff that connects all of us no matter of our differences.  Love is the ground we all stand on, the seemingly insignificant matrix which connects us all and is intact in and of itself.

So on this day I take a moment to celebrate the connection to You, Self, Other, our Planet, Cosmos and Love.

If you need to catch a bit of the fuzz - enjoy this story.  It’s guaranteed to warm you up!

Lots of BIG LOVE,

Lance Isakov, M.Ac.

3 Simple ways to be more mindful in challenging situations.

Hi Folks!

I hope you faired well in the storm!  I did some great hiking, sledding, LOTS of shoveling, some movie watching (never ending story, Captain Ron, & i started watching Silicon Valley-funny!) and lots of time on Facebook =).  I posted some pics too...check them out! How about you?

So next week is our big move to Berwyn and the beginning of Village Wellness! There are lots of changes happening with lots of potential challenges. I have also been thinking about some patients who are going through very challenging times.  The question is how can we be as graceful as possible with those times that really push us to our edge?

3 SIMPLE ways to be more mindfulness in challenging situations!

What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is simply the state of being aware or focusing your awareness on the present moment.  This sounds so easy, but when we are faced with these challenges it is sooooo difficult. Here are 3 techniques that will help!

1. Take 3 Bellow Breaths - This is a powerful deep breath!
Relax your shoulders and take a few deep, full breaths from your abdomen. Exhale powerfully through your nose, followed by deep inhalation by relaxing your belly open. Breathe entirely from your diaphragm, keeping your head, neck, shoulders, and chest relatively still while your belly moves in and out.

2. Hug someone or yourself! - Here’s the shocking truth: hugs boost our happiness levels. And scientific research is there to show this. Basically, a good hug is the fastest way for you to get oxytocin flowing in your body. Oxytocin, also known as the “love drug”, calms your nervous system and boosts positive emotions. Here’s how a good hug resulting in oxytocin flow affects you: It lowers your blood pressure, especially helpful if you’re feeling anxious. It lowers your cortisol (the stress hormone), enabling a higher quality of sleep. It can increase your social connections and a sense of belonging. * from the happyologist.co.uk

3. Be Creative or Solve a Puzzle! - Being creative or solving a puzzle will help you stay focused and centered on the momentGrab some paper, markers, or crayons!! Color in your grown up coloring book or solve a Rubix cube (i just learned how to do this btw- - very meditative!!)

Each of these simple acts will help you be more present, more mindful and will create more grace in challenging situations.
But don't take my word for it! TRY IT OUT!

Hope it helps!!!

Lots of love,
Lance

P.S. Starting February 1st we will officially be called Village Wellness and will be practicing in Berwyn. Our new email address is BeWell@VillageWellness.net so please add it to your address book! Thanks so much =)

Exciting news about our NEW wellness center

Happy New Year friends, family & beloveds!

I love this new years wish from Amy's favorite author, Neil Gaiman:

"I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something. So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever."

So are you ready to make mistakes? So far 2016 is shaping up to provide me with lots of New Mistakes as we start a new adventure.

As you know we are transitioning from our current location in Wayne to our new home in Berwyn starting February 1st! But what is particularly exciting about this move is that we will be merging with The Center for Vitality and Wellness, owned by the spectacular acupuncturist and gifted healer Damini Celebre!

Where? 6 Waterloo Ave, Berwyn, PA 19312

Parking? There is so much easy parking – across the street in the lot with the big mural, and next to the American Male store.

WebsiteWayneWellness.com will become VillageWellness.net When we hit February 1st, so soon you’ll be surfing to VillageWellness.net to book. Don’t worry, I will remind you about that ;)

(btw- our new website is still in the works so check back soon!)

Also, there’s no greater show of appreciation than spreading the wordabout what we do to your friends and family - please share this email or follow us and share on FacebookTwitter, or Instagram.  I appreciate your support in making this possible!

Lance's Winter Letter

Happy Wintertime Folks!

I hope you are feeling wonderful and enjoying your pre-holiday experience! I'm feeling pretty wonderful, and I also feel the pull of culture in me. Isn't it weird how powerfully we are influenced by the culture around us? For example, I am hardly ever interested in shopping and buying things, but recently, I'm thinking about going into stores and browsing amazon.com! Do you notice that at all?

It's paradoxical that during the most still and quiet time of nature, we humans are at our busiest and noisiest. If you go for a walk in the woods tomorrow, you will notice that nature is indeed very quiet. Animals are hibernating, birds have flown south, and the trees have lost their leaves. The energy (qi) has moved deep down into the roots and core. There is no buzzing, fluttering, chirping, busyness and no business (if you know what I mean)...just a deep and cold quiet. This is the energy of the Water Element! Nature rests, so that when the warmth of the sun returns in the Spring, the potential energy generated during winter can EXPLODE into life!!!  We have been seeing this happen on a small scale with flowers blooming in this unseasonably warm December. If you have have been feeling out of sorts - know that our tree and plant friends are feeling that way too!

You may experience the dichotomy between cultural influence and natural movement as feelingoverwhelmed, stressed or on edge. If that's the case, even if you're in the throws of shopping, I encourage you to stop and take a break. You have the full support of the natural world to slow down right now. Listen to the wisdom of nature —  powerful potential energy can build within you when you rest!

Below are some gifts to help you with this. Feel free to share this with anyone who might benefit!

For your virtual stocking stuffer, I would like to offer you 2 questions to contemplate right now, for 1 minute:

1. How would your life be different if you used this time of year to rest deeply, rejuvenate and refill your energy reserves? [set timer now!]

2. What are 3 ways that you can sync up with the deep, dark, powerful, quiet energy of wintertime? [set timer now!]

If you had trouble with that second question, read on!

For your main holiday gift, here are some Winter Practices: Try each of these for a minimum of 1 week and see your life change.

1. Meditate: Set aside 10-30 minutes per day to simply sit upright, be still, payattention and let go of your relationship to your thoughts and feelings.  DOWNLOAD: I've been listening to this meditation with my daughter before bed and it's made a big difference. Enjoy this FREE 10 Minute guided Stillness Meditation I just recorded for our current 10 Day challenge participants

2. Sleep:  For one week, go to bed early and wake up late! Up until the last 100 years, we have gone to sleep and awoken in sync with the sun! In summer we slept less and in winter we slept more. Imagine that! Our genes are actually programmed for non-electric light.

How to Create a pitch black bedroom experience

  • cover alarm clocks
  • put up light blocking shades
  • throw the TV out
  • If you don't throw your TV out, install this on your computer for night browsing.

3. Eat:  For one week, eat more cooked root vegetables and winter greens (like kale). Eat more grass-fed meat. Make soups and stews and eat lots of good fats (coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil, ghee, grass-fed animal fats). Eat warming foods like ginger and Cinnamon. YUM!  Avoid raw and cold foods that deplete energy.

These practices can help to strengthen your mind, body, and spirit and tune you into the gifts that the winter energy offers. They may even save you some money if you can abstain from cultural induced shopping. ;)
