Navigating a Polarized World from a Holistic Perspective

By Hannah Tighe, Gestalt Life Coach

In the midst of the challenges we face collectively, I recognize the weight of the world's pain that presses on so many of our hearts. During these trying times, I extend my hand to you with an open heart, a symbol of solidarity, and a gentle reminder that you are not alone in your feelings.

As someone who embraces the principles of Gestalt practice, I find solace in the idea that true well-being stems from profound connections with ourselves and each other, fostering equilibrium and harmony.

In a world often clouded by division and chaos, it can be overwhelming to navigate the layers of hurt and trauma that surface when we allow ourselves genuine contact and awareness. Yet, this process is not only helpful but crucial for our collective healing at this time.

In challenging moments, I often turn to what we call the Gestalt Contact and Awareness Cycle. This cycle empowers us to attune to our inner selves, align with our individual needs, and gain clarity on how best to support ourselves in times of divisiveness and chaos.

Let's go through it together and then we can put it into practice.

Gestalt Contact and Awareness Cycle: A Way Through Anxiety and Overwhelm

Take a moment now, as we walk through each step of the Gestalt Cycle. Let’s breathe and tune in, exploring how each stage can help us reconnect with ourselves:

  1. Figure - What’s pulling your attention?
Think about what’s lingering in the background—whether it’s a news headline, a difficult conversation, or social media post. Notice how it feels to acknowledge this.

  2. Pay Attention - Notice the Energy-Taking Shape
As you become aware, take note of the sensations and emotions emerging in your body. Is it anger, fear, anxiety? Just notice what’s there without trying to change it.

  3. Support - What do I need right now?
Gently ask yourself, “What would support me right now?” Maybe it’s taking a few deep breaths, standing up and stretching, or even putting a hand on your heart. What’s going to help you feel more grounded in this moment?

  4. Self-Support - Acknowledge Your Feelings
Allow yourself to truly feel what’s present. If fear or anxiety arises, let yourself know it’s okay to feel it. Be there for yourself, fully. Sometimes it helps to affirm: “I’m here, I won’t abandon myself in this.”

  5. Receive - Take in the Support You’ve Given Yourself
Allow a few moments to absorb the support you’ve offered yourself. Simply breathe, feeling any stress or tension begin to soften as you connect with a sense of inner calm.

  6. Integrate and Close - Reflect and Carry Forward
Notice how you’re feeling and acknowledge any shifts. What insights can you carry with you today? This completion brings closure to the experience, making it less likely that anxiety or tension will linger.

I hope these reflections bring support and comfort during these challenging times, and I also, fully admit that I too am having a difficult time maintaining my balance as we navigate through these moments, so please, give yourself grace and compassion.

If you need support at this time, please reach out. I am so honored to be able to support this community. We are here for each other.

With warmth and compassion,

Hannah
