Bladder 40 - Supporting Middle - An Acupuncture Point to Release What You’re Carrying, Restore Flow, & Help You Bend Without Breaking
Have you ever pushed through pain because you felt like you had no choice?
Kept going even when your body was asking for rest?
Carried responsibilities, stress, and expectations for so long that you forgot what it feels like to truly soften?
Many of us move through life bracing.
We tighten our shoulders, clench our jaws, lock our low backs, and keep pushing forward. We tell ourselves we’ll rest later. We’ll slow down when things calm down. We’ll take care of ourselves after everything else is handled.
But sometimes the body has other plans.
Sometimes pain, especially low back pain, arrives as a message.
A whisper… or sometimes a shout.
Something needs to change.
Bladder 40, known as Wei Zhong, or “Supporting Middle,” is one of the most important acupuncture points for releasing tension and pain in the low back. Located in the center of the crease behind the knee, this point has an incredible ability to restore movement, circulation, and flow throughout the entire back body.
I often use this point in the treatment room when patients come in feeling tight, rigid, stuck, or completely overwhelmed by the weight of life. It’s especially helpful for people who have been carrying too much for too long, physically, emotionally, or both.
This point reminds us of something simple but profound:
Healing doesn’t always come from pushing harder. Sometimes it comes from learning to bend.

Indications:
Physical Level
Low Back Pain & Sciatica: One of the premier points in Chinese medicine for acute and chronic low back pain, stiffness, and radiating discomfort down the legs.
Hamstring & Knee Tension: Helps relax tight hamstrings, ease knee discomfort, and release tension along the posterior chain.
Clearing Heat & Inflammation: Traditionally used to clear Heat from the body and cool inflammatory conditions.
Improves Circulation: Moves Qi and Blood to relieve stagnation, pain, and muscular tightness.
Emotional / Mental
Releasing Burden: Helpful for those who feel weighed down by stress, responsibility, or the constant need to hold everything together.
Softening Rigidity: Supports people who are stuck in patterns of over-effort, control, or chronic tension.
Restoring Flexibility: Encourages adaptability and resilience when life feels overwhelming or unyielding.
Spirit Level
Learning to Bend: The knee is a place of flexion. Bladder 40 teaches that strength is not always about standing rigidly strong. Sometimes real strength lies in the ability to soften, yield, and adapt.
Releasing What You Carry: Low back pain often reflects more than muscles and posture. Sometimes it reflects the emotional weight we’ve been carrying alone.
Returning to Flow: As part of the Water element, this point reminds us of water’s wisdom. Water does not force. It flows around obstacles, adapts, and keeps moving.
Location:
Bladder 40 is located at the midpoint of the crease behind the knee (the popliteal crease).
How to Stimulate:
Sit with your knee slightly bent and relaxed.
Using your thumbs or fingertips, gently press into the center of the crease behind the knee for 15–30 seconds, or massage in small circles.
Take slow, deep breaths.
As you stimulate this point, imagine yourself releasing the burdens you’ve been carrying and allowing tension to melt downward into the earth.
Feel Amazing!
Love,
Lance
