Spleen 2 — Great Gathering Place — An Acupuncture Point for Belonging, Nourishment & Coming Home
One of my favorite things about this time of year is that it feels like summer is having one last big party. In 5 element theory this is technically the beginning of the Late Summer Season. The gardens are so abundant. Tomatoes are practically falling off the vines. Everything is green and overflowing and plentiful. There are still long evenings, warm nights, swimming, bare feet, and that feeling that summer might just keep going forever.
And yet... something has shifted. The mornings feel just a little different. The light has started to change. Maybe you've noticed yourself thinking about September, even though part of you is saying, "Nope. Not ready." I actually love this little in-between moment. It's still summer, but we're beginning to feel the subtle invitation of another season approaching. And we can really feel it as we begin to see those first leaves brighten and fall.
In Chinese medicine, this is the beginning of Late Summer, the season of the Earth element. Earth is about nourishment. Food. Home. Community. Belonging. The things that feed us and give us a sense that we have a place here. It's the season of gathering around the table, sharing what we've grown, and remembering that we're not meant to do everything alone.
Which brings me to this season’s first Spirit of the Points Post!!
Spleen 2 has one of my favorite point names.
Da Du. Great Gathering Place.
Sometimes also translated as “Great City” or “Great Metropolis”, but gathering place resonates with me the most. A gathering place is somewhere things come together. People gather. Food gathers. Stories gather. Families gather around tables. Friends show up. Somebody brings something to eat. Somebody opens a bottle of wine. Someone starts telling a story they've told a hundred times before. And it’s in those moments, we remember something: WE BELONG.
I think there's something about late summer that invites us to gather ourselves in the same way. We've spent the summer going out into the world. Traveling. Exploring. Staying up late. Saying yes to things. Maybe getting a little scattered along the way. And then Earth quietly taps us on the shoulder, like an my Jewish grandmother and says, "Okay. Come sit down." Eat something. Take a breath. Stay awhile. You don't have to be productive right now. You don't have to figure everything out. Just let yourself be nourished.
I love that Spleen 2 is called Great Gathering Place because I think we spend so much of our lives trying to get somewhere else. We're always moving toward the next thing, the next season, the next accomplishment, the next version of ourselves. But what if, for a moment, we simply gathered ourselves back together? What if we gathered our attention, our energy, our people, and the parts of ourselves we've left behind while we were busy doing everything else? And what if we let ourselves actually receive what is already here?
In Chinese medicine, the Spleen is associated with the Earth element and with the transformation of food into Qi (energy) and Blood, but on the emotional and spiritual level, Earth also speaks to our ability to feel nourished, supported, connected, and at home.
And there is something especially beautiful about Spleen 2 right now. Spleen 2 is the Ying-Spring point and the Fire point of the Spleen channel. So here we are, standing right at the little doorway between Summer and Late Summer.Between Fire and Earth. Between being out in the world and coming home. Between the fullness of summer and the beginning of gathering it all in.
We don't have to rush toward autumn yet. It's August. The peaches are SO sweet. The gardens are still ridiculous. There is still plenty of summer left. Maybe this is simply the invitation: gather. Gather your people. Gather your energy. Gather the things that nourish you. Gather the pieces of yourself that have been scattered in a hundred different directions. And then... come home.

Supports Healthy Digestion: Traditionally used for digestive discomfort, abdominal fullness, diarrhea, and other Spleen-related digestive patterns.
Regulates the Spleen Channel: Helps promote the smooth movement of Qi through the Spleen channel.
Emotional / Mental Levels
Gathering Yourself: Helpful when life feels scattered or when your attention and energy seem to be pulled in too many directions.
Receiving Nourishment: Encourages us to notice where we are being nourished and, perhaps more importantly, whether we are allowing ourselves to receive it.
Finding Belonging: Supports a sense of connection, groundedness, and having a place in the world.
Spirit Level
Coming Home: Spleen 2 reminds us that nourishment isn't only something we get from food. We are nourished by friendship, family, community, beauty, rest, laughter, nature, meaningful work, and the simple experience of being here. The invitation of Great Gathering Place is to stop for a moment and gather ourselves back into our own lives. To notice what is already here. To receive instead of always reaching. And to remember that sometimes coming home isn't about finding somewhere new to go. It's about finally allowing ourselves to fully arrive where we already are.
Location
Spleen 2 is located on the inner side of the big toe, just distal to the first metatarsophalangeal joint, at the junction where the red and white skin meet.
How to Stimulate
Using your thumb or fingertips, gently press or massage the point for 30–60 seconds on each foot.
Take a few slow, easy breaths.
As you hold the point, ask yourself:
"What is nourishing me right now?"
Then ask:
"What am I ready to receive?" You don't need to come up with a big answer. Maybe just notice. The people around you. The season you're in. The food you're eating. The place you're sitting. The life you're already living.
Sometimes the medicine isn't about going somewhere else. Sometimes it's about noticing what is already here... and letting yourself receive it.
Feel Amazing!
Love,
Lance
